END OF AN ERA……..BEGINNING OF A NEW ONE

August 6, 2007 marked a very sad day in the history of Eastview Little League, and hit our own Tom Hogland pretty hard.  For those of you who don’t know, Tom is a longtime Eastview Board member and is one of the men who has meticulously manicured and cared for the fields at Eastview for several years. Tom’s work and dedication has been so important, that to show their appreciation, a few years ago Field #1 at Eastview was named after him for his work and dedication, and was called, “Tom Hoagland Field.”   The fields on the corner of Gaffey and Capitol were a real labor of love for Tom, so you have to understand that on August 6, Tom appropriately made this quote, “It is a sad day, because what took 46 years to build……took only 3 hours to demolish!”

It was a sad day for everyone connected with Eastview, and come on, everyone in Pedro is connected to Eastview, in some way, no matter how big or how small.  Some connections to Eastview were direct ones like playing there as a kid (probably with your dad as the coach), eating a cheeseburger or taco boat from the snack bar, hanging out with your buddies or staying to watch them play after your game ended, and still others might remember watching and/or coaching your son or daughter as a second or third generation Eastview player.  Or, your connections could have been indirect ones like the excitement that swept through the town of San Pedro while watching in 1989 Eastview Team as it made it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., or maybe you, like many, were so proud and excited that Pedro was a part of Little League history that year by having the first girl (Victoria Brucker) make it to the Little League World Series and pitch in a game.  Or maybe your memory was as simple as remembering the smell of the bread from the DiCarlo bakery wafting throughout the north end of San Pedro. As we close this chapter, you can see, we all have had some connection to Eastview.

Although today we are sad with the end of an era, today also brings great excitement for Eastview, because although temporary, in January 2008, we will have a new and beautiful place that we can call home on Knoll Hill. Eastview remains enthused about and grateful for the generosity that the Port of Los Angeles and our Local Councilwoman have continued to show us throughout this difficult time, because without their efforts, our kids may not have had a place to call home next season. Regardless of what you might have heard on the streets or read in the Daily Breeze, the Port of LA continues to move forward with their plans to follow through on their promise and deliver Knoll Hill “ready for sod” in time for the 2008 season. For that, we again would like to say THANK YOU to the Port of LA and Councilwoman Hahn!

Please rest assured the Board of Eastview is diligently working behind the scenes to ensure the successful start of the 2008 season, and can’t wait for new memories to be made at Knoll Hill, even if only temporary ones.   We look forward to welcoming back all of our old friends for the start of the 2008 season and invite you to extend our welcome to anyone interested in joining the league as new families for the upcoming season. Please check the mail for your 2008 Application or call The Sporting Place at (310) 832-1452.

See you at Knoll Hill!
